STRETCH
Description
The stretch breath is physically beneficial, in that it helps to increase the vital capacity of the breath and it also tends to intensify the prana in the breath stream which subsequently becomes available to outer or inner attunement.
Pattern
Inhale through the nose (both nostrils) and exhale through the mouth.

An alternative pattern, inhaling and exhaling through the nose (NN), requires more discipline and would be more appropriate for an inward orientation
Breath... in Sanskrit... is called prana which means the very life. It spreads life and magnetism in all parts of the body, for breath in itself is life and is magnetism.

Gatha I, Pasi Anfas 3

Attunement
To the All-Pervading life in space.
Special Variation
Presented at the 1995 Quaker Hall Retreat by Murshid Hidayat.
Standard Stretch Breath
Increasing and Decreasing by 2 counts
The audio file below is a narration that is intended as an accompaniment to the practice of the Standard Stretch Breath. The length is 8' 57"".

Each count advances by 2:
2, 4, 6, … etc. When the count reaches 28, it reverses back down.

After the instruction to "relax", there is a silence of 1 minute during which the breathing is allowed its natural rhythm.

The silent period is ended with the sound of a bowl being struck.
Extended Stretch Breath
Increasing and Decreasing by jumps
The audio file below is a narration for the Extended Stretch Breath. The length is 8' 08".

The counts from 6 to 12 are repeated twice. The counts from 16 to 28 are only done once. Then the pattern is reversed.

After the instruction to "relax", there is a silence of 1 minute during which the breathing is allowed its natural rhythm.

The silent period is ended with the sound of a bowl being struck.
