Discussion

David suggested that he write to Murshid Nawab confirming our affiliation with the ISM and that the Council supports his continuation as National Representative. We can re-visit this in one years time. (see letter sent 2018.11.06 below)
Letter to ISM from David Murray, National Representative
Dear Nawab,

This note is to confirm that our SMIC Board has agreed to continue to have me represent Canada as the National Representative in the ISM.

We are fully aware that there have been some NR resignations since the return to a single leadership. Our bond to the ISM goes back a long way, probably to the days when we started the Lake O’Hara retreats and welcomed Hidayat to join with us, and lead us on a wonderful journey that has brought us to the present.

Before the return to a single leadership, and under the coordination of Rani, the National Representatives were getting to know each other. It was our thought that we wanted to make the membership of the ISM, through the NRs, a relevant voice in the administration of the organization as well as the esoteric aspect of working with the Sufi Message of Inayat Khan. The International Council, at the time, was comprised of the Representative Generals, the Executive Committee and the National Representatives. We were just beginning to develop a line of communication within the International Council that would recognize and value the voice(s) of the membership. I am sure that we did not think that there was a need for, or even the possibility of a single voice from the membership, but we wanted to inform and advise Executive Committee about the thoughts and needs of the ‘rank and file'. Probably due to the advent of excellent user-friendly communication technology such as ZOOM, it seems that the National Representatives, as a group, could finally become effective in the organization.

It would be very useful to hear from the Executive Committee about how they hope to incorporate the National Representatives into the workings of the International Council.

I don’t feel that there is a need to rush into any particular action. We, in Canada, are interested to see how the ISM develops over the near term. My point with this email is to let you know that I will continue to represent Canada as National Representative and look forward to all the news that you can send us. I especially am interested to hear about how the voices of the membership can be an integral part of the ISM organization.

In regard to appointments, you may be planning to replace Rani with a new NR coordinator. I am not particularly interested in that role at this time, but I am looking forward to continuing the communications with the other NRs when the time comes.

sending loving greetings,

David

Discussion

David suggests the SMIC Council meet with Rani McLaughlin. All agree it's a good idea.
Nirtan suggests that Nuria, Rabia and Petra Beate and all those disaffected Sufis no longer in official positions be invited.

A board retreat was discussed. Akbar is looking into dates before the Easter weekend in April at the Bethlehem Centre in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

A meeting of the council should be held to discuss the organization of the 2020 Loon Lake Retreat.

Kuan Yin reported that retreats at the Crossing At Ghost River will likely be held annually towards the end of August. This year (2019), the retreat will be 2 nights, August 26 to 28.

It was decided that the next Council Meeting will be Monday, December 3rd.
Moved by Jelaluddin to adjourn the meeting
