From the Autobiography of Hazrat Inayat Khan

"I was transported by destiny from the world of Lyric and Poetry, to a world of Industry and Commerce.

I bade farewell to my motherland, the soil of India, the land of the sun, wondering whether I shall ever return some day ?

While on my way to America, I did not know how long it would be before I would return. The ocean that I had to cross seemed to me like a gulf between life in India, which had now past, and that which was still to begin.

I spent moments on the ship looking at the rising and falling of the waves, seeing in this rise and fall the picture of life itself, reflecting the life of nations and of all races, the life of individuals, as well as life in nature, and in the whole Universe...”

Many years have passed since our Master left beloved India behind, where legendary musical events had been experienced in the great palaces of Maharajas, and where in the early days numbers of golden medals were offered in highest recognition of Inayat Khan’s musical genius.

Most precious spiritual attunements had also been experienced as valuable sources of inspiration, which stimulated our Master’s courage and determination to venture overseas to new worlds, where commercialism and materialism seemed to be so contrary to life in India, the land of sweet dreams.

The great Ideal of carrying a Universal Message to the world was our Master’s sacred mission, and no sacrifice was too great while treading that thorny path, where the work that was destined to be accomplished grew gradually, day by day.

This year, all those who have had the privilege of hearing the call of the Message in our time are together celebrating the memory of that historical event, and In view of our responsibilities as humble servers of that Divine Cause, let us always feel attuned to the “Spirit of Guidance”, which is ever present in our hearts, silently guiding on the path.

As our Master said: "I looked for Thee in Heaven, my Beloved, but at last I have found Thee hidden as a pearl in the shell of my heart."
