Dear Sufi friends, sisters and brothers,

You are invited to apply for membership in the Sufi Movement In Canada, an organization created in 1982 to assist the spread of the Sufi Message of love, harmony and beauty as presented in the teachings and work of Hazrat Inayat Khan.

There are many benefits from having a non-profit organization with charitable status. It is fair to say that without this status our conferences, retreats and 25 years of Lake O’Hara Camp could not have happened. Two years ago, our non-profit status enabled the Mysticism of Sound Concert and Conference to save literally thousands of dollars as a result of cost reductions given to the event by theatres, hotels, newspapers and individuals.

The board of SMIC has decided to leave the 2009 Membership Donation at $25.00 per year, per person so that it continues to be affordable for anyone with an interest in the Sufi work and a desire to join with a community of supportive members who are ensuring the organization existence.

Of course, Sufi events have been mostly self-supporting and we all hope to see that sort of success in the future. But not all projects can raise money nor depend on volunteer workers to realize their goals. This year has seen the creation of a fully featured SMIC website and the rebirth of the Heart To Heart as an online newsletter; both supported by money from SMIC. Membership dues make these projects and future events happen.

Your membership is important and while it is certainly not a replacement for one’s own Sufi work it does expand involvement for oneself and for others in this heart-centred community of Canadian Sufis.
